چکیده

Nacrtak Assessment of disturbance can provide forest managers with information to make appropriate decisions on site rehabilitation and monitoring. This paper evaluates the accuracy of successive estimates of site disturbance using two ground survey methods. The results from the point transect and grid point transect and grid point intercept methods were compared with the results from an intensive 1x1 m grid survey over a 4 ha study area. The point transect method, using a transect spacing of 30 m, provided the most accurate and consistent estimate of disturbance in the study area. Following the harvest, approximately half of all treated area was disturbed to varying levels. Intact forest floor (undisturbed) and light slash were the dominant surface conditions, covering an average of 70% of harvested area. The results indicate that shallow disturbances (litter left in place or removed) were more frequent than deep disturbances (topsoil removed, subsoil exposed, or rut exposed).

Assessing log extraction related soil disturbance and solutions to protect soil and reduce disturbance of forest ecosystem.

Skid trails are the main routes for wood extraction and also the main source of runoff and sediment production in Forests. This research was conducted in Kuhmiyan forest of Golestan Province to determine infiltration, compaction, strength (resistance to penetration) and moisture content in three treatment including control (in the forest), wheel ruts and middle of skid trail were measured in th...

Demography of treeline mountain beech as a guide to lahar events

Mountain beech (Nothofagus solandri var. solandri) trunk diameters were measured in each of two catchments, a control, and a stream catchment (a putative lahar path), to assess the vulnerability of a hut sited on the Wakapapaiti Stream, Tongariro National Park, to disturbance events. Beech forest margins were more abrupt, terraced, and were adjacent to rocky areas in the stream catchment, while...

3d Landscape Metrics to Modelling Forest Structure and Diversity Based on Laser Scanning Data

This paper investigates the potential of laser scanning data to model forest 3d structure and its spatial pattern. Most of the existing methods for assessing structures in mountain forests are either inventory methods, which cannot be used for spatial assessments over large areas, or methods aimed only at assessing actual wood production. Several new landscape metrics are developed and applied ...

Utility of Remotely Sensed Imagery for Assessing the Impact of Salvage Logging after Forest Fires

Remotely sensed imagery provides a useful tool for land managers to assess the extent and severity of post-wildfire salvage logging disturbance. This investigation uses high resolution QuickBird and National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery to map soil exposure after ground-based salvage operations. Three wildfires with varying post-fire salvage activities and variable ground truth d...
